we belong to each other | original handwritten poem
I wrote this poem on April 19, 2024 and I still remember the scene vividly.
I typed it into my notes app on my phone as I was walking along a path one morning in Prospect Park, my bit of peace in the hustle and bustle of Brooklyn, NY. Those morning walks were my time for presence and noticing, something that grounds me, and also gives me an existential feeling unlike anything else. Like walking and noticing everything that can be noticed makes me so aware of how much happens all at once, and how much is missed by those around me.
As I was walking I saw an old woman in a vibrant outfit, a plane flew overhead (a noise I couldn’t stand and still noticed every single time), the birds, and every bit around me and realized I was a part of it. In that moment I was leaving bits of myself just as I was taking in an integrating everything around me, and we were one together. It was such a sobering and wonderful feeling, and I’m so glad to have written this poem from it. May it inspire you to look around, and realize that you’re a part of it too.
